We have needed to do this for years. It will never happen so long as automakers and oil companies pull the stings in Washington. That is exactly the reason you don’t see streetcars in every major city anymore and why younger cities have a joke of a light rail system… if they have one at all.
What we need to do is outlaw private interest lobbies and then we might get somewhere with this. I am in no way saying that this is a bad idea, you would have a very hard time arguing that it is a bad idea. Policy makers might say that it is just too expensive because they have been paid off to have that opinion, but realistically a subsidized railway system that actually worked would be hugely beneficial to this entire country.
I wonder how the media would spin the story if people protested for an update to our transportation infrastructure.
France’s TGV is so fucking legit. our country is so massive that a transportation system like this is not only incredibly desirable but at this point NECESSARY.
